Implementation scenario
Pharmacy refrigerator monitoring with LoRaWAN
An implementation scenario for temperature records, after-hours alerts and documented responses in pharmaceutical cold storage.

Illustrative implementation scenario. It does not describe a named customer or measured project results.
Imagine a pharmacy that needs to review several refrigerators after closing time. The proposed system links suitable temperature monitoring devices to a dashboard and an escalation workflow. The starting point is the responsible pharmacist and the storage requirements of each product, not a generic alarm setting or a claim that wireless connectivity establishes compliance.
Measure according to the product and the procedure
Identify what is stored in each unit and the applicable manufacturer instructions. Do not apply one temperature band to every medicine or vaccine. Establish the required measuring range, accuracy, calibration evidence and placement procedure with the responsible professional. For vaccine storage, the current CDC toolkit discusses digital data loggers, calibration and probe placement. A LoRaWAN sensor must be assessed against those requirements and the local programme; being connected does not, by itself, make it a suitable or approved vaccine logger.
Design for a closed pharmacy, not only a working day
Pilot the system with the refrigerator operating normally. Check radio reception with the door closed, local recording capabilities of the selected device, report delivery and how missing data is displayed. Configure recipients and escalation outside business hours, and test gateway internet and power failures. Keep an approved backup procedure. Where an external probe is selected, follow the refrigerator and probe installation instructions so the installation does not damage a seal or alter normal operation.
Close the event with a documented decision
When an excursion is reported, the qualified team follows its approved procedure and product-specific instructions, records the event and seeks the appropriate assessment. A dashboard must not automatically declare a medicine safe to use. Intended benefits include visibility across units, organised records and clearer responsibility for responding. Validate those benefits with data completeness and controlled alert tests before expanding. Medication disposition, calibration and regulatory compliance remain decisions for the responsible professional and applicable programme.
Before you start
- Which products and storage instructions apply to each refrigerator?
- Does the selected monitoring device meet the required calibration and logging criteria?
- Who receives after-hours alerts and makes product-disposition decisions?
