Non-revenue water: preparing a smart metering project

To address non-revenue water, measurement needs to connect with a way to investigate and act. A consumption reading or alert is a starting point for reviewing network conditions; it does not establish the cause of a loss by itself.

Organise the network information

Identify available bulk and customer metering points, operating zones and the records you will use as a reference. Gather meter locations and characteristics, along with access to power and connectivity. This helps define a pilot without assuming that conditions are identical across the network.

Define what happens after an alert

Agree which events need review: abnormal consumption, possible leaks, tampering or reverse flow. Assign responsibility for confirming events and prioritising field visits. Keep a record of investigations and actions so the team can relate telemetry to operations.

Connect the pilot with existing systems

Define what dashboards need and what information must be shared with SCADA, GIS or billing. Assess connectivity and equipment on site before expanding installation. Vista Tech combines metering, IoT connectivity and analytics; scope and outcomes are validated for each project rather than assuming a universal savings percentage.

Before you start

  • Which metering points and historical records are available?
  • Who will verify alerts and coordinate field work?
  • Which systems need the data, and how often?
